Commitment to Diversity & Inclusion

NUM values diversity and fosters a climate that is grounded in respect and inclusion, enriches the educational experience of students, supports positive workplace environments, promotes excellence and cultivates the intellectual and personal growth of the entire university community.

Creating a more diverse and inclusive campus is a priority for NUM, linked to and aligned with our strategic plan for the express purpose of building a stronger foundation for a promising future. Further NUM's strategic plan now includes its inaugural diversity strategic plan, A More Inclusive NUM: Advancing Equity and Diversity (2020–25)

Our Working DEFINITION OF DIVERSITY

Diversity is recognizing and valuing the variety of backgrounds, perspectives and beliefs held by members of the NUM community. Our diversity tenets include sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, race, ethnicity, color, nationality, mental ability, physical ability, religious affiliation, age and veteran status. Diversity can also be shaped by our political ideologies, organizational/institutional structure (for example management status, classification, work location, division/department unit group).

These communities and nations include the Susquehannock, Nentego (Nanticoke) and the Piscataway people, who consider the land that the university currently occupies part of their ancient homeland.

For information about how you can support Indigenous communities by incorporating a personal statement into NUM’s Indigenous Land Acknowledgment, see the Office of Inclusion and Institutional Equity’s resources on Recognizing Indigenous People & Land.
