The National University of Maryland (NUM) is proud to announce its participation in Maryland's pioneering Service Year Option and Maryland Corps programs, championed by Delegate Cathi Forbes and launched through the Maryland Department of Service and Civic Innovation. These initiatives create pathways for community service, workforce development, and educational preparedness across the state.

The Maryland Department of Service and Civic Innovation is at the forefront of expanding service and volunteerism statewide.  NUM will serve as a host site, with roles ranging from academic support to environmental conservation. Service participants will gain valuable skills while making tangible contributions to their communities.

"We're thrilled to be a part of these transformative programs," says NUM President Kent Devereaux. "NUM deeply values service and experiential learning. This aligns perfectly with our mission to empower students to become engaged, impactful citizens."

NUM's focus on addressing complex issues, fostering a global perspective, and offering accessible study abroad aligns with the goals of these service initiatives.

"Service, education, and career readiness are interwoven in a powerful way through these programs," says Paul Monteiro, Maryland's Secretary of Service and Civic Innovation.

Delegate Cathi Forbes emphasizes the importance of nurturing compassionate, future-oriented leaders. "This collaboration gives participants the chance to discover where they can truly make a difference," she states.

The Service Year Option targets young adults who have recently graduated from high school. Participants earn a minimum of $15/hour for at least 30 hours of service per week while honing professional skills. Support networks help guide their post-service path, whether it involves further education or career development.

Maryland Corps is open to individuals of all ages and offers similar incentives and career development support.  Partnerships with Maryland's Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), community colleges, and apprenticeship programs further enrich the experience.

Governor Wes Moore underscores the profound, long-term impact of these initiatives, stating, "We're not just launching programs; we're connecting Marylanders to their communities and unlocking their potential in ways that will shape our collective future.”

After completing their service year, participants earn a substantial completion award to be used for direct payments or as a deposit into a Maryland 529 Education Account, promoting further educational pursuits.
